At Spear, we’re committed to ensuring that our investments have a positive impact and contribute to making the world a better place.
As part of Spear’s commitment to delivering returns while making the world a better place, we embed the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into our investment framework. This helps ensure that the work we do when it comes to addressing global problems in the SADC region aligns with international efforts to build healthier and stronger businesses, societies, and economies.
We also believe that we can do more good by having a narrow focus and a deep impact. As such, we’ve honed in on the SDGs that our portfolio companies have the best chance of advancing while also improving the environment and communities in which we operate.
By taking this approach, we ensure that our value proposition goes far beyond the businesses we invest in and the investors we serve. Instead, it extends to job creation and retention, the elevation of previously marginalised voices, and the protection of people and the environment.
Our particular focus is on SDGs 5, 8 and 13 which cover gender equality, decent work and economic growth, and climate change respectively. We’ve not only invested in women-led businesses, but also companies that have gender-equal hiring practices. We focus on labour-intensive (high employment) industries and work hand in hand with our portfolio companies to improve their environmental sustainability.
We’re in Business to Add Value
There is very clear value in the SADC region, our portfolio companies, and the resources offered by our investment partners. At Spear, we aim to build on this value to create the best possible financial, economic, social and environmental returns. Using our extensive in-market experience, we’re in a strong position to ensure that conditions on the ground are better after we make an investment than when we first identified the opportunity.
To us, that means taking those raw opportunities and ensuring that they have long-term viability and serve the growing communities around them. That means equipping the exceptional entrepreneurs we invest in with the skills they need to ride out challenges and fulfil their growth potential. This meeting of investment and skills capital ensures that we can deliver consistent returns for our investors.
